Rice Crispy Treats Recipes to Make with Kids

Rice Crispy squares are an American tradition and a sticky staple of childhood. Many of us first learned to cook mixing Rice Krispies into a gooey mix of butter and melted marshmallows, waiting impatiently for the squares to cool so parents could cut them into squares—and then, ah, heaven!

We’ve assembled a collection of Rice Crispy treats recipes, all based on the Kellogg’s official Rice Krispies Square recipe. Here’s the original recipe, in all its glory:

The Official Kellogg’s® Rice Krispies® Treat

  • 6 cups Kellogg’s® Rice Krispies® cereal
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 package (10 ounces) Marshmallows
  • OR
  • 4 cups Miniature Marshmallows.

In a heavy saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat and stir in the Kellogg’s® Rice Krispies® cereal until the mixture is well-combined.

Spray a spatula with cooking spray, and use the spatula to transfer the square mixture into a 13x9x2-inch pan coated with cooking spray. Let cool and cut into 2-inch squares.

Using the original recipe, you can up your rice crispy treat game with the following recipes:

Candy-Filled Crispy Squares

These will tempt children and adults alike, and are really simple. You’ll need:

  • One batch of the official Kellogg’s® Rice Krispies® recipe
  • 24 Fun-sized candy bars (Snickers are great).

Spread half the rice crispy mix into a greased 9x 13 pan. Unwrap the candy bars and lay them out, end to end, on top. Cover everything with the last half of the rice crispy mix, let cool, and cut into squares.

Rice Crispy Ice Cream Cones

Kids will have a blast assembling these easy-to-make fake ice cream cones. You’ll need:

  • One batch of the Kellogg’s® Rice Krispies® recipe
  • Mini cones
  • Candy melts
  • Sprinkles
  • M&M candies.

Drop five M7Ms into each mini cone, and add a tablespoon of the square mix into the cone. Add another two tablespoons to the top, shaping the mixture to resemble an ice cream cone

Microwave the candy melts until melted, and drizzle over the top of each cone with a spoon. Add sprinkles and top with an M&M.

Dangerous Dino Crisps

You’ll need to add an extra ingredient to the official Kellogg’s® Rice Krispies® recipe for these Jurassic dinos. After the marshmallows melt, add a few drops of green food coloring before mixing in the Rice Krispies.

Line a jelly roll pan with wax paper, spraying the paper with cooking spray. Use a spatula to press the green square mix into the pan. Allow to cool for fifteen minute, then used dinosaur-shaped cookie cutters to make your own crispy dinosaurs.

Crispy Treat Pops

the last of our rice crispy treats recipes, these crispy treat pops require:

  • One batch of Kellogg’s® Rice Krispies® recipe
  • 16 wooden ice cream sticks
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil,

Press the rice crispy mix into a 13×9 pan sprayed with cooking spray and let cool. Cut the cooled squares into sixteen equal pieces, inserting an ice cream stick into each treat.

Melt the semisweet chocolate chips with ½ tablespoon of the oil over low heat (or microwave). Do the same with the white chocolate chips and the remaining oil. Holding each treat by its ice cream stick, drip the top of the treat into one of the melted chocolate mixtures (or both—we won’t judge). Add sprinkles to the melted chocolate on the treat and place on wax paper to cool.
