Now it seems there\u2019s another reason match up kids and stuffed animals\u2014cuddly toys can help children learn to read.<\/p>\n
We\u2019re not sure where exactly they started, but many libraries now organize stuffed animal sleepovers. Children drop off their cuddly toys at the library for the night, and the librarians take photos of the animals making friends, exploring the library together, and, of course, reading books. The idea is that when the children see how much fun the stuffed animals have with books, the kids will want to read as well\u2014and according to one small study from Japan, the idea works.<\/p>\n
The study, published in the journal Heliyon, monitored forty-two Japanese preschoolers whose stuffed animals \u201cattended\u201d library sleepovers. Not only did the kids develop an interest in the picture books the animals \u201cread,\u201d they also started reading the books to the stuffed toys.<\/p>\n
This is important. When you read to your child, it\u2019s a passive activity from the child\u2019s perspective. You\u2019re doing all the work. When a child reads to a stuffed animal, she\u2019s taking on an active role. Even if she can\u2019t really read yet, she\u2019s practicing holding books and remembering the story. It\u2019s a significant step towards becoming an independent reader.<\/p>\n
