Most young children won\u2019t be able to stay up until midnight, and those who do may have their sleep pattern disrupted by the late night. Extending bedtime by an hour as a special treat is enough time to satisfy most children without leaving them tired and cranky the next day. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Make a New Year\u2019s Resolution as a Family<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making New Year\u2019s resolutions is a yearly tradition in most households, and there\u2019s no reason the family can\u2019t make a resolution together. Possible family-friendly resolutions include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing thank you letters to members of the armed forces<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volunteering as a family<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designating times for cleaning the home<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reading together<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a game night once a week<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can reinforce and encourage resolutions with small rewards. One of the most popular New Year\u2019s Eve family ideas, countdown bags are simply brown paper bags with the hour written on them. Inside each bag is a small surprise to keep children occupied until the next hour comes around. Ideas for inside the bags include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small toys from your local dollar store<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iseeme.com\/en-us\/personalized-puzzle\/outerspace-personalized-puzzle.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personalized puzzles<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stickers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coloring books<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Storybooks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Materials for crafts.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Make a Family Time Capsule<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is another of the easier New Year\u2019s Eve activities for families that gets everyone involved. Choose a nice box or large mason jar, and have the kids decorate it. Everyone chooses one or two items that relate to something they did that year, and all these treasures go into the time capsule. Decide as a family when to open the time capsule (the next new year is plenty of time for small children). When you open the capsule, everyone gets to share in the memories. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Midnight Balloon Drop<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is perhaps the most complicated of our New Year\u2019s Eve family ideas, but the effort is well worth the payoff. To make your own balloon drop you\u2019ll need:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A large plastic tablecloth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several yards of yarn<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A hole puncher<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Painter\u2019s tape<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scissors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several packs of balloons<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confetti (optional)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cut the tablecloth in half, punching holes along either side of the cut. Weave yarn loosely through the holes to hold the two pieces together, leaving about two or three feet of yarn at one end. You want the yarn to slide out easily when you pull on the loose end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the painter\u2019s tape, secure the tablecloth to the ceiling at either end, leaving the middle loose enough to add balloons. Tape the loose end of yarn to the ceiling as well, so little hands can\u2019t drop the balloons early. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blow up the balloons (a balloon pump will make this much easier), and gently push them between the ceiling and the tablecloth. Sprinkle in some confetti if you want.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the time\u2019s right, gather the family under the balloon drop and pull on the yarn to release the balloons.
