Late Summer Activities for Kids

Summer is in full swing, and your kids are excited to play outside and explore! Before school starts again (and it always comes up fast!), enjoy the summer sun and spend family time together. Here are seven of our favorite late summer activities for kids.

Picnic Trips

This summer activity for the kids can be as simple as eating lunch on a blanket in the backyard, or as adventurous as taking a day trip to a new place or park. All you need is a picnic basket, a blanket, and some kid-friendly food. Possible snack ideas include:

  • Mini bagels and muffins
  • Animal crackers
  • Vegetables and dip
  • Sliced fruit and yogurt
  • Trail mix
  • Fruit-infused water

Yard Games

Enjoy a little friendly competition with the family by playing games in your own backyard! Soak in the summer sun, sink your toes in the grass, and try a game of croquet, bocce ball, bean bag toss, or lawn bowling. When you’re all tired out, come back inside and settle down with a personalized book for storytime.

Chalk Art

If you need to stay closer to home, grab some chalk and let the kids decorate the sidewalk and driveway. Kids can use chalk in many ways, from playing tic-tac-toe and hopscotch to drawing, exploring colors, and practicing simple spelling.

Farmer’s Market

Find fresh fruits and vegetables for dinner and delight your kids in a fun outdoor day trip! Create a shopping list for next week’s meals and have your kids help pick out what you need.

Craft Show

Expand your child’s creativity by attending a craft show with artists and handmade goods!

Outdoor Movie

Find a park near you that plays movies at an outdoor theater, or hang a white sheet from one side of your house and use a projector to watch in your own backyard! Kids will love this summer activity, feeling as though they are on an adventure. Break out the popcorn, cozy up with a fleece blanket, and cuddle together as you watch under the stars.

Lake Exploration

Take a trip across your local lake in a boat or canoe. If you aren’t near a lake, visit a pond and have your kids explore the area to discover different kinds of creatures. Lakeside is also a perfect location to have your picnic!
